Both the cowhand and the calf are seen in the same dimming light of day, but the reality of the cowhand's condition is much heavier. He is in a struggle of wills with the calf. His stewardship of this calf is not in the calf's best interest. His asserted authority is to support a population that is hundreds if not thousands of miles away. A population that he has chosen to be isolated from.
